Banksias would have the worst image of all Australian plants because of their phosphate intolerance. For the hardiest and most colourful flowers in Australia, they are very sensitive to fertilisers, composting and over watering. The less attention they receive, the better. Plant in winter, with a no-phosphate slow release fertiliser. After the first summer no watering is required.
